In light of recent events, we felt it was time to renew our commitments with an emphasis on how we conduct business in this new environment.

The Necessity of Expansion Joints in Piping Systems

Pipes carry many types of fluids including liquids and gases from one location to another. Piping systems are often designed for extreme high or low temperatures. However, both hot and cold applications will expand and contract with an increase or decrease in temperature. Installing expansion joints in a piping system prevents thermal expansion from creating high stresses that could cause cracking welds, bending pipes and failing anchors. Composition and Function: Expansion joints are constructed with metal bellows or Teflon, end fittings and accessories such as flow liners, tie rods, and protective shrouds. Most expansion joints are made up of several coils designed to withstand the internal pressure of the system. The common bellows assembly is positioned to flex under the thermal movement of the connected piping. Expansion joints are able to absorb any longitudinal loads as a result of extreme flexibility. To maintain the overall stability of the whole piping system while transferring longitudinal loads, it is necessary to install piping anchors and guides. Thermal Expansion and Placement: Pipes are not an exception when it comes to expansion and contraction with hot and cold temperatures. Piping engineers are able to determine the rate of expansion resulting from the materials and temperatures used for the specific application. Many contractors have been taking advantage of grooved mechanical piping for more than 90 years. However, this method of pipe joining is still not known or understood in some of the fields in the commercial facility industry. Several pipe joining methods are available for mechanical piping, but some contractors may be unaware that grooved mechanical piping can provide many benefits such as increased profits, compressed schedules, and worksite safety. Faster Pipe Joining Standard grooved couplings install faster than welded joints and flanged joints due to recent product improvements by grooved coupling manufacturers. Some couplings have unique installation-ready joining technology that install in much less time than standard grooved couplings. Do You Need Pipe or Tubing? There is a Difference!

The terms pipe and tubing are often used interchangeably, but there is a difference. Experts that work with these products across many industries may not even know how to completely differentiate between the two. Even online research can be misleading because many websites mistakenly misidentify the real differences between them. Tubing is primarily used for structural applications. The outside diameter (OD) is important because it is a specific number. OD and the wall thickness (WT) determines the size of tubing required. Tubing has tighter manufacturing tolerances which often makes it more expensive than piping. However, be aware that copper tubing usually has a measured OD that is 1/8” larger than the nominal ID. Stainless, aluminum, and steel tubing all have measured OD’s that are exact or very close to the stated number. Pipe is categorized as tubular vessels and are mainly used in pipeline and piping systems. Pipe usually transports gases or fluids. Pipe is normally specified by the nominal pipe size (NPS) and the schedule (wall thickness). The manufacturing of nominal pipe sizes is based on a standardized nominal inside diameter that is different from the measured OD. Regardless of the wall thickness, the OD of a pipe will not change. COMPANY HISTORY

Missouri-Kansas Supply Co., Inc. was formed as much out of the need to fill a void as it was entrepreneurial foresight. E.R. Hendricks incorporated the company in November 1946 in the state of Missouri. His main business venture at the time was that of a plumbing contractor who became increasingly challenged by the inability to procure piping products as a result of WWII.

His new venture began by extracting two of the top sales executives (one plumbing and one industrial) from a well known distribution giant in the Kansas City market. With an Employee base of 8, a single facility of 27,000 square feet that was once a branch of another quite large Kansas City based supply firm, the journey began.

In those days distribution supply houses were fairly generic and regarded as “Full Line Houses” that inventoried both plumbing and PVF materials (Pipe, Valves and Fittings). The plumbing lines included such lines as Eljer, Chicago Faucet, Delta, Tyler and many other ancillary lines. Industrial products were such lines as Walworth, Grinnell, Bonney Forge, Weldbend, Capitol and additional lines. The business continued and prospered through 1958 when Mr. Hendricks decided to retire and sell the Enterprise to a group of employees as has been the case as each new generation progresses. As the business continued to grow, additional personnel were hired for sales and warehouse functions and as a part of an eventual succession plan.

In 1974 the decision was made to forgo the plumbing trade and concentrate solely on Industrial PVF trade. The company soon became distributors for such powerful brands as Hills McCanna, Sarco, Mueller, Hackney, and a host of others.

In 1996 a new ownership group took the reins. It was at this time that a very aggressive sales strategy was developed and enhanced with alliance partnerships in Affiliated Distributors, ASA/IPD. We also added additional key supplier partnerships such as Apollo/Conbraco, Hayward, Ipex, O.C. Keckley, Watson McDaniel, WIKA, EIM, Outokumpu, Crane, and Weldbend.

In addition to key suppliers Missouri-Kansas Supply Co., Inc. underwent additional transformation with a total reorganization of the business. Department heads were identified and empowered with clear cut expectations and goals. Outside organizational consulting was engaged for the first time in the history of the business, and a new path of prosperity was embarked upon.

In 2007 an effort to re-brand the name and increase the footprint of the company was undertaken. The ownership of Missouri-Kansas Supply Co., Inc. changed its operating name to MKS Pipe & Valve Co. This has proven to be a correct path to future growth.

That brings us to present day where leadership, growth and honesty define our core operating values and mission.

Today MKS Pipe & Valve Co. continues to operate from the original location plus three additional buildings totaling 65,000 square feet and three pipe yards.

As with any distributor, it is the support and confidence of our loyal customers, capable and willing employees, and strong a bond that is developed and nurtured with vendor/partners that are ultimately the keys to success. Planning and technical training sessions with supplier/partners as well as regular employee meetings are emphasized and encouraged.

We have seen markets ebb and flow and this will undoubtedly never change. All economies fluctuate given time and the constant transformation of the free market. It is ultimately how the differing challenges are handled that separate the successful from the temporal.

The key with any organization is to be ever mindful of core competencies and to be connected not only with your customers but your core leadership and employees as well.

To Our Customers, Vendor Partners, and Friends:

Missouri-Kansas Supply Co.,Inc. completed its fiscal year for 2006/2007 on March 31, 2007 and as we look back at our first sixty years as a company there is a strong feeling of accomplishment. The mission/journey we have been on serving Kansas City and surrounding areas has always had at its core a dedication to improve our operations, relationships, and grow with the times. Our current product offering as well as ongoing business success has been in a larger sense not only to our loyal clientele but also our superior vendor partners.

It is in that frame of mind we find ourselves as a company here in 2007. As always we are looking for new opportunities to serve, grow, and re-identify the business direction and goals that are primary to our stake-holders and owners.

Utilizing new technology in data and communications in recent years we at Missouri-Kansas Supply have continued to evolve as a business enterprise. With the use of computers, the internet, and strategic marketing partners such as Affiliated Distributors, supplyFORCE, and the American Supply Association we have extended our service borders to new and potential clients, connected to more suppliers, and in some cases even other distribution. This has been done with desire to strengthen our business, and achieve our ultimate goal to be "The Strongest Link in the Supply Chain."

Along with a dramatic rework of our website we have decided to take a significant step in regards to our company name. As you will notice on the letterhead above we have consolidated our identity to the three basics letters MKS Pipe & Valve Co. This change was made to more clearly identify our company as to our core products and services. Is this a new and bold idea? NO, but we do feel that this change represents the galvanizing of our identity with a forward view of continued growth and service to our customers.

From our perspective we anticipate this change will be a seamless and logical one given our current direction and future growth plans. As always we welcome your input and suggestions to further increase efforts to improve our company. We trust you will enjoy our new look, our bolder and stronger attitude towards service and growth. Our goal is to exceed your expectations and maintain your confidence that with every phone call, fax, email, or visit to our will call desk the essence of Missouri-Kansas Supply will always be contained in "MKS."
